Money Talks: Ditching Shame & Growing Your Financial Confidence

Money. Just the word can make some of us cringe, flinch, or break into a light sweat 😅
But when we stop treating it like the dirty word no one wants to say out loud and actually start talking about it? Magic happens.

At our recent Positive Power Lunch, which is part of our Positive, Passionate Business Women BLOOM membership, we were lucky to have Jan Morrison, Financial Therapist and all-round money mindset magician, join us as our monthly "Member in the Spotlight" to unravel the stories we tell ourselves about money, and what’s actually holding us back from financial freedom. (Spoiler: it’s usually not the numbers.) 💡 Check out Jan's brilliant work at janmorrison.com.au

Jan brings over 40 years of experience in the finance industry, but she’s not your typical money expert, she's so much more! She's blended her deep knowledge of financial systems with mindset psychology, RTT, NLP and lived experience as a sole supporting mum of three. Now, she helps women break through emotional blocks and step into a more confident, conscious relationship with money.

Why Your Childhood Still Rules Your Wallet

“Money doesn’t grow on trees.”
“Rich people are greedy.”
“What do you think, I'm made of money?!”

Sound familiar?

Jan reminded us that our earliest money memories shape our beliefs, usually before the age of 7. Whether we absorbed stress, scarcity, or guilt around wealth, those subconscious scripts still run the show unless we actively rewrite them.

The Retirement Gap “There’s a 38% difference in a lump sum at retirement between women and men.” 👉 Meaning women retire with significantly less – despite living longer.

The Four Money Types (Where Are You On the Ladder?)

  1. Financial Roundabout
🚫 Earn. Spend. Repeat. Always running, never arriving.
  2. Financial Self-Sufficiency
✅ Bills are covered, there’s a little extra, but not much left to build with.
  3. Financial Wellness
🔄 You’ve got a buffer, you’re building assets, and investing a bit too.
  4. Financial Freedom
💸 Your money earns money. You’ve got choices, not just income.

Wherever you are, there’s no shame—but there is power in knowing where you want to be.

EQ + IQ + Unblock = Your Money Toolkit

To grow wealth confidently, Jan teaches three essential pillars:

  • Money EQ: Your emotional connection with money (beliefs, habits, patterns)
  • Money IQ: The practical stuff; budgeting, saving, investing, understanding debt
  • Money Blocks: Deep-seated subconscious scripts that keep you stuck

And here’s the kicker: you can do all the right things on paper, but if a subconscious block is still telling you you're "not worthy" or "not good with money"? You’ll sabotage your success every time.

That’s why Jan uses RTT and NLP tools to reprogram those beliefs, often in just one session.

Clarity = Success

One of the big takeaways?

“The clearer you are, the better your success.”

Whether your dream is to feel safe, become debt-free, or travel the world with a first-class frequent flyer card, define it.

Because if your subconscious doesn’t know exactly what “success” looks like for you… how will it ever get you there?

Cautious, Conscious, Confident. Women = Smart Investors Subtext: Research shows women often outperform men when they invest – we just need to start.

From Spender → Saver → Investor

Most of us start as spenders. Maybe we learn to save.
But few of us step into the power of investing—and that’s where true freedom lives.
Jan encouraged us to think beyond the weekly budget and get curious about:

  • Micro-investing platforms (some start from just $1!
  • Passive income
  • Aligning investments with our values
  • Letting our money work for us, not the other way around

Real Talk from Our Community

We heard from many women in the room who resonated deeply; whether it was about procrastination, childhood patterns, or the shared obsession with AppSumo “deals” 🙃

We laughed, nodded, and recognised ourselves in each other’s stories. Because while money can feel isolating, you’re never the only one navigating those feelings.

Your Tiny Shift for This Week

Jan left us with this:

“What’s ONE thing you’ll do differently around money this week?”

It doesn’t have to be huge.
✅ Maybe you unsubscribe from that shopping newsletter
✅ Or set up an emergency savings account
✅ Or simply say out loud, “I’m learning to be confident with money.”

Just take one tiny action that your future self will thank you for. 💛
